From the six degrees website:

7.4.06 Banco de Gaia ? Farewell Ferengistan

Toby Marks, under the pseudonym Banco de Gaia, has spent most of his career focusing on issues that he finds bewildering by expressing his thoughts and observations through music. He wrote his critically acclaimed 1995 album Last Train To Lhasa to highlight the plight of the Tibetan people and successfully mixed electronica with a braver vision. Farewell Ferengistan, his upcoming release from Six Degrees, captures the spirit and mood of Last Train To Lhasa but this time Banco de Gaia's concerns are much closer to home: what are we doing to ourselves? Where is our materialism taking us, would it not be wise to consider our position?
The music on Farewell Ferengistan is the wondrous mixture of exotic and urbane we have come to expect from Banco de Gaia - tantalizing vocals, haunting instrumentation, uptempo, downtempo, futuristic and ancient. It's all there. After a decade and a half of music making, Toby remains as brave, experimental and willfully on his own path as ever.

This is good news! (Though I'm not too excited about the the Six Degrees' cheeze description.) I'm googling around for "Ferengistan" with limited success. Is it a real place? Doubt the Star Trek reference aplies. A form of Ferengi seems to be a middle-eastern reference to Europian forigners.

All will be revealed in the fullness of time (and in the sleeve notes).

I read a blip on the internet somewhere that Ferengistan refers to middle europe. Perhaps the title is a nod to the affects of the new crusade - globalism and its religion - consumerism. On your knees shoppers, prepare to meet your maker. But really, idaho.

10 points to the first person who can tell me what 'TESCO' stands for! (the name, not the ethical standards)

Well...

Tesco was founded by Jack Cohen, who served with the Royal Air Force during the First World War. After returning in 1919, 21 year old Jack invested 30 pounds of his reward for military service to buy surplus food stockpiles and he opened a little stall in East London. On the first day he had a four pound turnover and one pound profit. Little by little, his business started to boom and Jack expanded to other markets all over London. He also began wholesale trade.

The first line of Cohen brand goods placed on the market was Tesco tea. In 1924, the name which the company later took on as its corporate name emerged. The name Tesco contains the initials of the owner of the firm, Mr. T. E. Stockwell, who supplied the firm with tea and of the initials of Jack?s surname ? Cohen. Towards the end of the twenties, instead of stall trade Jack focused on window shop trade taking place on the main street. In 1929, the name Tesco first flared above a shop provided with a lock in North London (Burnt Oak, Edgware).

In 1932 Tesco Stores became a commandite company. Two years later, Jack bought a piece of land in North London (Angel Road, Edmonton) with the intent to construct the head office and the warehouse there. The construction plan had proposed and specified new ways of materials inventory control and the warehouse became the first modern building of this type in the country. At the beginning, the stock kept 50 branches going, and in 1939, the number doubled.

After the start of the Second World War, Jack launched (before the government did) food rationing to make sure everyone received an equal food supply. To ensure enough fresh vegetables for his trade he bought three acres of land with greenhouses and nine acres of fields in Cheshunt and Hertfordshire for growing cucumbers, tomatoes and fruit trees on. Nowadays, part of the English headquarters? administration buildings are situated there.

Since World War II, Tesco Stores corporation has been growing steadily. As far as Central Europe is concerned, the purchase of 13 department stores from Kmart corp. (CZ Rep. and Slovakia) in 1993 and opening of the first Tesco hypermarket in Budapest in the same year is proof beyond reasonable doubt.

Hmm...weren't Ferengis a class of alien on Star Trek? I think they were merchants as well...just pure evil ones. It'd be cool if one of the songs was titled with a Star Trek theme...Hmm...I need to get out more...

Si, it's not TESCO's thank fuck, but it is funny that in a discussion about materialism i work in a shop that sells material... and you are welcome to share my wall anytime you's need it... as for what TESCO stands for i forward the suggestion: Taking Everything So Competition's Over...

call me unfashionable, but this Jack Cohen of tesco's sounds like a pretty sound bloke. Shame his philosophy seems to have been gobbled up in late 20th century consumerist maelstrom. Stellar - I might make myself unpopular (more so) by saying this but - yes I agree . I too am hoping for a "return to form" with this release. I loved you are here in parts but as a whole it was rather unfulfilling. I'm a magical sounds man myself, wouldn't be amiss to see more of the sense of fun that permeated that album. (Duncathon cringes, sensing oncoming backlash......)

STELLAR - NO NEED TO SHOUT, dear. I think it's a matter of taste, the old boy's getting on a bit you know so getting a bit more serious in his old age ;-) I personally prefer the later albums, more depth and detail which is what I'm into.

It was my pleasure and my privilege that Toby commissioned me to edit his "2004" DVD. Hope you all liked it.

It is my pleasure and privilege too, to have been sent an advance copy of FAREWELL FERENGISTAN. I've been a fan since even before the release of MAYA, and I can say without doubt that this is THE Banco album of all time. It'll surprise you at first, but with repeated listenings you'll feel the sweep and the flow, the power and the beauty, and come to agree that this is an absolute corker! Like Steven Wilson of PORCUPINE TREE, Toby has always made proper albums, not just CDs filled with tracks. The sound design, sequencing and overall construction here is simply brilliant. My album of the year so far, by far. Buy immediately! And spread the word.

Looking forward to it. You Are Here was excellent in parts (the transition between Down From The Mountain and Zeus No Like Techno is simply fabulous), but not quite as flowing as some of his earlier albums. For me, Gray Over Gray is certainly a very beautiful piece of sonic art, but it and Waking Up In Waco were left as the odd ones out, sandwiched between the first two and last four tracks, that all worked well together. I'll admit I'm a Magical Sounds... man without shame. I'm certainly looking forward to this next outing, and can only hope to finally seeing Toby live again. I LOVE what he does with the live versions of his tracks.

HSBC stands for the Hong Kong Shanghai Banking Corporation. But that is just to cover up its original name when the founders were young and crazy, rumour has it they wanted to create a mentalist bank and call it the Hairy Sweaty Bollock Company...after all, where is the K for Kong? And wouldn't it be HKSB??

I'm not so sure about the second part of that (!) but the truth is it was set up to handle money from the lucrative opium trade with China. Funny how things change, did you know at the end of the 19th century Britain went to war with China to make sure the opium kept flowing freely? No quite a war on drugs, eh? (Although rumour has it that soldiers on both sides were a bit partial to a smoke so I guess you could say it was a war on drugs!).

Have to disagree with you Henrik, though I agree with you that 'Magical Sounds' is flawless. I think the two tracks you feel are misplaced fit well with the album and into the Banco library. Besides being on of Banco's most moving tracks ?Grey Over Grey? is one of the Pink Floydish, psychedelic blues tunes that are not uncommon to Banco CDs, like the vocal 'Glove Puppet' on Igizeh, or the soulful ?Touching the Void? from your favorite. ?Waking Up In Waco? also is not a unique structure for Banco. It has a unapologetically long intro, a Banco trademark, taking half the track, before completely shifting gears and revealing a great dubby bass line and it's melody. It?s also very humorous. No less out of place than ?I Love Baby Cheesy? or the instrumental ?Glove Puppet?. If you had said ?Tongue In Chic? was a problem with the album, I?d be inclined to agree. The vocals just don?t work for me. The vocal effects at the end and everything else about the track are great. I?d have preferred an instrumental version for the album and the vocal to have appeared on the Grey/Zeus single. As it is, it?s the only Banco track I ever skip. ?Not In My Name? has to be one of Banco?s finest moments. Anyway, I?m sure what ever Toby has cooked up in Farewell is going to be great and I can hardly wait.
