This Week I have mostly been listening to .....

"Hit to death in the future head" - The Flaming Lips, So good, in so many ways, but mostly because it makes me grin like a loony. "In conversation with my self"- Bill Evans. Three piano parts, one jazz genius, mind boggling if not exactly easy listening. "Recorded Live" - Salt Tank. Heart pounding, neck-hair tingling fun, recorded live at a megadog 'nuff said. "International Times" - Trans-Global Underground. Perhaps not quite as good as "dreams of 100 Nations" but lovely all the same. Ooooooh tunes, glorious tunes. So many and so little time.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned anything Talvin Singh, Karsh Kale, or MIDIval PunditZ yet; granted he (Talvin Singh) hasn't had anything new for awhile, but his stuff is still fresh and exciting. I heard a tabla track he contributed to Sweetback's new ambient nu-soul cd (a not too impressive disc overall, personally). Oh, let's see... Ryukyu Underground's first cd (Does anyone know how I can buy their second and remix cds without paying a fortune by purchasing from Japan? All said and done, it would cost me approx. $40 each to buy either Mo Ashibi or the new remix album. Damn American pigeonholing and vacuous diet of sonic shit that floods all our mainstream airwaves), Nitin Sawhney track "Raag," Natacha Atlas track "Daymalhum," Afrocelts' POD release and Tabla Beat Science's performance DVD (Talamanam Sound Clash: Further Adventures in Hypercussion), waiting to receive my TJ Rehmi cds, and anything to do with Tuvan throat singing or didgeridoos (I like to consider myself a practitioner of both). Does anyone hear know or like Ojos de Brujo's "Bari" release? Can't wait for Ozomatli cd to come in @ me local library. Hey, can I buy Banco's Ten Year's Remixed somehow from here? Finally, to those of you who mentioned Kaya Project and Ott Blumenkraft, I would just like to know what sources you used to obtain their music (can't find them anywhere). Thanks in advance.

10 Years Disc 1 and the new Youssou N'Dour CD, Egypt. A wonderful album that allows his natural talents to shine, not over produced and not tailored to a western market, one of his best yet. Plus the desert blues Tinariwen and the acid croft of Shooglenifty.

Warrior on the Edge of Time is great Jetsam. It's my favourite Hawkwind album. Have you read any of the Michael Moorcock books?
Posted by Jetsam
21st Jul, 22:30:24

Yes! Loved them all really, especially the Elric Novels. Did you ever read "The Time of The Hawklords" by Moorcock and Mike Butterworth. That's so cool, sort of Rock Sci Fi with their Hawklord alter-egos as protagonists. If you've never heard of it, i'm sure i've got 2 copies for some reason, and could send one your way. Not Moorcocks finest however. I'd also recommend Roger Zelazy the Amber series, starts with "9 Princes in Amber", Zelazy was also influential to Hawkwind: "Damnation Alley", "Jack Of Shadows". Quark Srangeness and Charm and Astounding Sounds, Amazing Music must vie for 2nd and 3rd place in my fave Hawk albums. Incidentally, saw Hawkwind Live recently, down to their 3 piece: Dave Brock, Alan Davy, Richard Chadwick, and they were amazing. Some stuff they did was a little like "It is the Business of the Future to be dangerous", only more purposful, dark and dancey. Yes they too have succumbed to the the psychedelic ambient dub vibe! It was body-sonic-tastic, bit like the darker stuff Banco played on the recent tour. When's the Hawks new album out!!?

No not read it. I've only really read Elric, Corum, Hawkmoon etc. Been trying to find all the old paperbacks on ebay! I own Von Beck but have never gotten round to reading it. Have you read Gloriana The Unfullfill'd Queen :About a queen who can't have an orgasm! (Men Eh!)
Last saw Hawkwind about a year ago with Tim Blake supporting. Would love to go to one of the Hawkfests but always miss 'em! !

Tim Blake's the dude, "the crystal machine" was some of the earliest trance-like synth used. I love the effect of long repeating echoes, the sense of time, distance and place is awesome. Reminds me a little of Pink Floyd's Echoes, an epic of sonic soundscape! Not read Gloriana, though have a copy (i think). I'd also recommend: Robert SIlverburg "up the line", "Dying inside", Philip K. Dick "Ubik", "Flow my tears, the policeman said", Roger Zelazny - as mentioned earlier, and if you like fantasy novels: Hannes Bok "beyond the golden stair", H.Warner Munn "Merlin's Ring", and Sci-Fi/Horror/Fantasy: Clark Ashton Smith (contemporary of H.P. Lovecraft, much underlooked) who wrote loads of wierd short stories, many available as e-texts: http://www.eldritchdark.com/wri/short/

The Aloof - Sinking & This Constant Chase For Thrills (why is the band so unknown??? They're almost as great as Massive Attack. Ever heard more uplifting and... massive song then "One Night Stand"? It rocks!), Banco - YAH, Dufus - 1:3:1, Mr. Bungle - California, Mountaineers - Messy Century

Some comedy items from the BBC Radio 4 website. Concrete Cow (surreal and very funny) and The Now Show (which is like The Mary Whitehouse Experience grew up ten years, stopped buying NME in favour of The Guardian, like that inevitable, scary day when you finally make the switch from Radio 1 to Radio 2).
