Mr Posty handed me my copy of MDR through the car window just as I was driving to work this morning. Of course I ripped it open and slammed it into the player, so listened on the journey and liking it very much, and quite different to what I expected. I love Spirit of the Age (one of my all time HW favourites) unrecognisable to start with but slowly builds and pulls together in inimitable Banco style with a great fast drum-beat, tripping over itself, and appearance of the Spirit morse-code, and the plain "matter of fact" voiceover for the lyrics is totally different but spot on. Echoes is brilliant and brave, I thought it would be a tough one to capture the same feel as Pink Floyds original version, but Toby does it in his own style. Some of the synth wows in there remind me also of PF On The Run and Soufie together. I love the water on the beach at the end of Echoes/start of Soufie 2009 which reminds me of the "rowing boat" on Momentary Lapse of Reason too. Overall a very clever moulding and melding of the old stuff. Toby, I can really understand and agree with your choice of tracks as classic influences and say you've been very clever putting it together and must have had a lot of fun doing it. Top(by) Marks! The only track I didn't know until I youtubed it was the King Crimson track Starless.
CD2 had me and the missus in a great mood this evening, after a shitty day at work. The track selections are faves, but have a different sound that really got us in the party mood. There is almost a JMJ Rendezvous feel about the orchestration of part of Soufie Blue mix. The mixes generally sound more full on, raw and live. The new version of Celestine is superb, I loved Dick Parry's playing on the original but this version is more chilled and flowing. And of course Last Train last. I had wondered if this album would be simply a collection of oldies in original format, but everything sounds fresh with a different perspective, and a lot of "nods" to old-style sounds and influences. Very enjoyable, old yet new. Looking forward to getting together at Dingwalls.
