HI there, I fisrt got in to the Megadog scene in about 94/95 when I was living in Preston, Lancashire. I remember them coming to the University of Central Lancashire a couple of times. I remember one night when Children of the Bong, Drum Club and System 7 were playing. Two of my best mates were coming over from Derbyshire in their beat up Morris Minor. They arrived just as Drum Club started. Up to that point I had never been so happy to have two of my best mates turn up to experience it all with me. I remember a guy walking around as a robot with a laser beam over his eye and people dressed as butterflies (i think) on stilts. From what I remember it was a great night!!!!!! Shortly after that I went to Artlab in Preston. I managed to get a invite/ticket as an old mate of mine was DJ ing in one of the early slots. When I arrived I remember being blown away by the decor. Things like the aliens head at the top of the stairs and having see through bits of the floor upstairs in the chill out area wher you could see through to below and everyone dancing. I only went a few times but I loved every minute of it. I always remember feeling really safe and happy at these nights. I have a shoe box at home in the attic with loads of tickets from the time and photos I took. I know a little sad but hey they were good times.
Brian, I have most of PEH stuff. It's mainly Thunderdogs I'm after. Gig you may like in Exeter soon, Banco, Eaty Static, Sunfish, System 7....Is Teabag ok?
Crikey, I remember megadogs at the academy in Manchester, herbal tea parties at the new ardre (sp?), acid rock at the Pheonix, club kosse at the road house etc. Parties in Yorkshire as well with all the guys and girls that went to the above nights. and of course Spawnee Posse nights in Leeds/Bradford
I am another who went to the Beach Festival in 98. Best festival I ever went to. Where my wife took here first and only trip. We would like to thank the guy who was selling 'Slow Dust' as the sign on the beach said. Got us out of a bad one and made us laugh for days. Still laughing now 8 years later. Nights and the Rocket and Fridge all blur into one these days. Do you remember the rocket when it was just one large cavern before they put the extra floor in. Also Club UK before the b'stards closed it down.
Has any one mentioned Spooky yet. Came up on my first ever pill to Little Bullet. Will never forget that.
Hey John: Looks like there were a few of us at the beach "in the sand" in '98 - see also: http://www.banco.co.uk/forum/1/1030
Well i was just looking on for anything to do with Planet Dog (cos at the mo i'm listening to their last compilation CD) and i found this forum ..ded chuffed it's re-kindled some great memories. My 1st Dog was in '93 with Ultramarine and Autechre..really opened my ears to some new music and also it's where i 1st learn't how to dance..well maybe not the 1st couple of Dogs but by Loop Guru which was Megadog 8 i'd almost lost my pogo-ing punk kinda style! (actually it never did leave me..sorry to the toes i stamped on..) Yeah so i was at nearly all the Manchester Megadogs i was a shaven headed bloke wearing a Hunt Saboteurs T-shirt with BITE BACK on it and by half past whatever i was half naked..and thats what was great cos you'd get the prissy 'Cream' types and the hairy old hippy types the crusties (god damm them lashing me with smelly dreads..Hmm just jealous) just anyone who wanted to dance..and dance..and dance we did..me and my mate Darren who's wheelchair bound just bopped till we dropped infact it was Darren who introduced me to the Dogs and we went to the Apollo Dogs (which were never as good as the Manchester Academy ones) You didn't need to take lots of illicits and some of my best Dogs were just booze n pot fuelled.. Also it's where i was asked to shag someone!! yeah like i'd shag yer in them toilets (she was a corker tho) So lots of good memories and never did i see a scrap..which is a rarity. The bouncers were pretty cool and even let me in when i was caught with a bag of goodies. The decoration inside was fantastic cos afterall the Academy is completely devoid of character unless you liked hiding behind the black curtains (Ahh thats where i could of done some shagging!!) Also there was a really pretty girl who worked the bar and at later Dogs i saw her dancing in the crowd as a punter..yeah Dogs were good for flirting..at but mostly i danced. Ok gonna go..Take care all you old Dogs Pat http://www.myspace.com/howlingterror
Pat thats a long time we here at brew HQ have fond memories of Darren an yr Good self, .....skin up a large
seen someone at the academy rushed out by paramedics after a bad 'e' or summat. remember the bouncer who had the dead the long beard? smoked my hash pipe in his proximity there once at an ozrics gig...thought he was one of us!!! the first one (of two???) at the apollo was ace!
Sitting at the back of the top tier at the apollo, was a unique vantage point to appreciate the genius of the colour sound experiment lights. As someone who spent quite alot of time charging around the front/middle in various venues, I ended up up there when they played "born slippy" at midnight on the new years eve gig (a protest against my least favourite Underworld track by a country mile). I discovered that the big picture view of the lightshow was awesome. Otherwise I always preferred the Academy. But my favourite megadog venue was the Marcus Garvey in Nottingham.
yeah i remember that..... 808 state followed 'born slippy', and i remember that at the beginning of each song, the guy from 808 state would say: 'this one's called..........., and it goes like this'. sounded stupid when it got to track 5 or whatever, but they played a great set. ege bam yasi was last on and i remember dancing like a lunatic on the balcony (please say that you don't remember!)
Ahhh the Garvey - can't remember when they played but, banco, HIA, afx, egg bam yasi, tranglobal underground...can anyone remember who played when?
In my collection Iv got banco on orgnl casset.orgnl vyl LP(P/d). pro-mo video live.cd incl Woof distro( i think) but i can never place it cos i get to stoned still! (after all these yrs its like tryin to find the keys)happy days peaple.
The Manchester Megadogs ROCKED HARD!-Me And my mates always got in a bus(specially hired) from our tiny North Wales Town and head for them regularly at the academy...Higher Intelligence Agency Banco de gia,Eat Static, and the wiked Mike Dog as MC, Those were the days brothers and sisters. Bring on the new website and new tours! As our civilization destroys itself, there has NEVER been a better time for a resurgence of MegaDog Mentality! JJ.Over and out.

This certainly has bought some amazing memories for me - I spent just 2 months in Manchester, and went to Herbal Tea Party and saw Sven Vath, There was another night - wish I could remember the name of the night, but it happened at the Boardwalk, downstairs at The Uni in Oxford Road and once over at the Poly to. If anyone can help.....my memories are a bit hazy! :-) I met some fantastic people who looked out for me. Amazing after parties in Hulme, Ladywell(?) and some woods somewhere too but we got busted before we even started.
remembered it - Spiritus. Have photo's from these nights - will upload and post link here soon.
will the dog ever tour again?
I got into Megadogs / Herbal Teas / Acid Rock / Havok when I was in Manchester. My discovery of the music I can pin point exactly. I was walking home one Friday evening and Pete Tong played Underworld's 'Cowgirl" on Radio 1. I had never heard anything so awesome - it brought back the feelings you get when your a lot younger and you get passionate about music before the cynicism of age takes over. All of a sudden (I was early in my mid 20's) there opened up a whole new music scene populated by amazing people. It was the start of some fantastic friendships. For example, me and a said friend co-founded an IT company which is still going strong (admittedly we did this a few years after Megadogs ceased!). Point being - it wasnt *just* about the music. It was really about the people. Best Megadog ?? Hard to say. So many. One that does stick in the mind is one in Manchester. A load of us had done a "Reclaim the Streets" road protest during the day - stopping the traffic in central manchester and opening the roads to the people. It was an inspiring day of 'people power' and in the evening was a Megadog with Underworld playing. What better Saturday could you have ?? A friend of mine took in placard from RTS that said 'More Bikes' -- it got mis-read and reported somewhere in the press that someone was waving a placard saying 'Move Bikes' which caused some confusion in the reporter ! Megadogs and their nights of their ilk connected and brought together a bunch of people with similar world views - and got them dancing to amazing music !
vibealive tshirt could be me and the girl my ex mail me
Sorry to butt in .. I've just listened to Michael Dog's new album and Mixmaster Morris is right! It's fantastic! You can also check it out at the pushmipulyu site - www.pushmipulyu.com or Myspace ....
just stumbled onto this site and it's bringing tons of [hazy!] memories! I went to pretty much all the Megadogs and Herbal tea parties between 93 and 95, thank god I did it when I was that age and not now, god only knows what state I'd be in the day(s) after if I tried it now!! was up in the attic the other week and found a flyer from the 93 Christmas Herbal tea party, signed on the back by Dr Alex Patterson, got to be one of my most prized possessions, I should get it insured. If anyone knows Mark Hampson feel free to pass on my email address to him, been a while since I bumped into him, last seen I think on a barge in 2003, before then at the fantastic orbital gig at the apollo in 2000.
just had a memory, whilst walking down the street, of repeatedly jumping on stage and then getting bollocked by the 'friendly' security staff at manchester megadogs.... it suddenly doesn't seem so utopian after all!!!!
Ive seen spooky a few times at newcastle and brixton. But i'm finding it really hard to get hold of their stuff! Did anyone get the 'bamboo' single? if anyone can giz a hand it'll be appreciated! did anyone go to new year in 94 at brixton?, or at decadog the year after? - any photos?, it would be great to look back at those 'mad as a pan of crabs', type nights! love you all and lets all have a good 2008 folks! loobster xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Hi there! I'm trying to track down Kim Lewis, on behalf of the brew master, he was the sound engineer for Megadog. If anyone knows him could you give me a shout! Thanks!! DoZ
Just heard that Joie has left Eat Static ??????
Megadogs were some of the most enjoyable gigs which I ever went to.
yes, amazing parties, i only ever went to 2, and they were on the same tour the Midi Circus Rave. First one was at the Brixton Academy, AFX, Orbital , System 7 etc etc. This was also my first ever time in 'The London'. Venue was amazing, so well laid out and the whole place was done up amazingly, such attention to detail, it was a real treat. The muslin 'ceiling' above the dancefloor that the light shone onto and through that provided some cinematic psychedelia for teh folk sitting in the circle. Which brings me to the point that i did not know there was a circle, i was in the corridor up the stairs and decided to walk round and found a door, i entered and was physically stunned at what i saw....hundreds of seats, lights flashing and sweeping everywhere, it looked HUGE and i never even realised it was there. Still reeling from the head rush i went down and Orbital came on and played a very trippy set that included a slightly detuned and warped version of 'naked and the dead', and when they played Chime the whole place went into meltdown AND people were applauding the lightshow. By then i was seriously mashed....Orbital finished and we could scarcely believe we still had Aphex to get through....He came on and virtually destroyed the dancefloor, glitchy, bassy, scary, 'all over the fucking place' is i think the technical term. It was amazing. Totally different from Orbital but every bit as entertaining and joyous. When the circus arrived at the arches in glasgow, i just knew that nothing would compare to what they done in Brixton...no afx neither...Sure enough, it left me wanting more...i think i was still reeling from the Academy night to be honest.....The arches looked great though, but not even 5% as spectactular as the Academy.. Amazing stuff, amazing acts, amazing people, amazing memories.
Looking at your lovely posts brought back so many memories (well the ones I have left !). To Fred (post on 27 March) & Jenny (post on 1 April) I think that I may have been the tall guy at the front at Manchester Megadogs. I went to nearly all of them in Manchester and others in Leeds + London. I am not quite 6 foot 7 inch but I am very tall. I was usually dancing, hands in the air, at the front in a vest and leggings giving gurning smiles and hugs to all friendly combatants. I used to take a water pistol to soak Teabag whenever he started wailing. After a few gigs I got to know some of the crew incl Michael (v fine chap) and Bob and started helping out. At one of the early gigs I handed out boiled sweets from a dog-food bag for a laugh. We also ran a bubble machine but had to sack that as too many people were slipping on the excess soap solution coming from the machine. At a later gig we set up a net of balloons to cascade in to the crowd. Only problem was that we had to blow up the balloons by mouth pre-gig and by the time of the gig the temperature had soared so much that a third of our balloons had popped. Hey ho. Big up to Bob Fletcher, Ian Fletcher and Nikki for the Herbal tea parties which were great in the early days. I started to get pissed off later by rude youngsters (showing my age now !) pushing and shoving on the dancefloor - the spirit of camaraderie had been swamped and they were too crowded. I believe that Rob now works for Manchester city council and Ian is still in music and works with kids (I bumped into him about one year ago). I have not seen Nikki for eons but I hope that she is well. I now have two twin boys (light of my life) and have a shit job + I live in Hulme. I am currently offline due to moving flat but if you want to chat my tel number is 01612269245. When I get reconnected to my ISP I will post my email address. Keep yer peckers up.
Hi Loobster! I was at the brixton NYE allnighter 93/94, if fact I was the "alien Ant" onstage with Eat Static you mentioned in an earlier post The photo and others from Manchester Megadogs can be seen here on the Facebook megadog page (you have to register to view I think) http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=9076411647

Ditto, if it wasn't for your preference for the Academy as the best venue ever, I would like to hazard a guess that you might either be my friend Graham Scott or, if not, you probably should be a friend of his. Am I right or am I utterly wrong? Apologies in advance if you've no idea what I'm on or on about. Cheers.
Brewmaster - Is that for real? Is there a linky?? Its the weekend before Solfest so might struggle but then again, thats a flabbaghastingly good line up!!! I am hopefully gonna be put in charge of a dance tent at a 2-day festival next year...fully aim to have as many Magadog bands as possible interspersed with current live dance acts who would have fitted in to a megadog if they had been around...
Well well well, it is indeed true. Watch this space...
