Hi, I'm putting an exhibition together for a small arts centre based around the megadog-type club scene particularly in manchester and Leeds (but anywhere will do) in the nineties. It would be really great to hear any accounts of experiences at places like megadog, herbal tea, return to the source etc etc Any ramblings would be massively appreciated (mainly due to the fact that my own memories are now rather hazed and dconfused!!) Cheers.
Best gigs: Eat Static and System 7 at the Rocket in 92/93..yes my memory has gawn too! I remember the first all-nighter ever at the Brixton Academy (a few months after the 3am Pongmasters Ball): I was fascinated how a packed tense crowd at the start packing every available inch (with corpuscular people flow), slowly became a relaxed thrawl of bodies with space to move by 2AM. I remember standing by an EV cab in the Gamelan circle zone and suddenly it sprang to life with my favourite excerpt from Amorphous Androgynous' "Tales of Ephedrina". I looked around in my Ecstatic state...and spied the DJ foolin' with me. Ahh, sweet days! Did you ever attend the finest of all 90's clubs:Oscillate where 'Ambient Dub' was reared. The most amazing art events of the nineties, without all the gurning nut-heads. I will put some more thought to this...I may still have all the flyers somewhere...
I have some great memories (mostly very specific moments, rather than recollections of the whole night), however I have a few fragments that nothing from both then and now and in the furture could take away. Often the stngest recollections where towards the end of the night, when the band or DJ Evolution/ with MC Tea Bag was really cutting loose. There was one guy - I think he was from the megadog posse, who must have been 6 foot seven or so, and he'd always dance in the middle at the front, who was such an inspiration to others going for it - he was always sooooo on it ! My best nights were always when either Banco, Eat Static or Underworld played - I have an early ticket for Manchester When 2 or 3 of the above played - not forgetting Sysyem 7 of course - a great herbal tea in Manchester with them . This subject does of course demand mush more time and concentration than I have right now - I'll try and get my thoughts together and come up with something slightly more cohesive. In the meantime good luck with the exhibition - please post notice of when and where it is afterall - to mis quote Hunter S Thompson, " Manchester in the nineties was a very special time and place to be a part of, .... there was madness in any direction, at any hour. You could strike sparks anywhere. There was a fantastic universal sense that whatever we were doing was right, that we were winning.... And that, I think, was the handle --- that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of Old and Evil. Not in any mean or military sense; we didn't need that. Our energy would simply prevail. There was no point in fighting --- on our side or theirs. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave. Sums up what it was all about to be a Dog
I'm afraid i cant remember much of the megadogs, i know i was there so thats the main thing! I'd love to be able to do it all again so this time round i could actually remember it. I miss the manchester scene: megadogs, herbal tea parties, acid rock, havok if you fancied summit heavier. I remember the tall guy...hooray my memory is coming back and mc tea bag used to make me feel funny!! Didnt there used to be three guys who'd turn up in fancy dress each month?
Are you Jenny Brown ? Yes the 3 blokes were great - it was as fishermen one time doctors the next, they'd go round with sticky notes writing things on them and pining them on people - total nutters
Hi Rachel, Blimey. My memories are pretty cloudy too - many associated with various illegal substances. Tranglobal Underground at the Academy coming on with bright bright white light and amazing masks on, Underworld and Drum Club at Sheffield Uni Megadog... I went to loads of the Manchester Megadogs and the few Sheffield Megadogs, as well as lots of Herbal Tea Parties. The people there were so wonderful and there was a vibe like I've never known at a night like never before or since. I've got a black Club Dog t-shirt and a big Megadog poster somewhere pulled off a wall you can borrow for the exhibition if it helps - it's fluorescent green and incredibly tatty but you are welcome to loan if any use. Oh, and a funny cheap yellow poster from an Eat Static night too from the same period. Also, photos of us all getting ready to go out to Megadogs. Please tell us all where/when the exhibition is going to be on. Wouldn't miss it for the world. Michael.
big it up to the Megadog massif! I used to be a regular down at the Garvey in Nottingham for those amazing nights - Eat Static, Banco, System 7, Michael Dog, 808 State - what a way to be introduced to the scene! I remember people on stilts, scantily clad lasses handing out ice-pops, UV light everywhere and ear to ear grins! twould be good to hear more about other peoples nights Megadoggin' it! peace
Megadog. Just forming the word in my head will often bring the sting of tears to my eyes and the goosebumps to my skin. The finest nights of my life. I remember little beyond the ecstasy and sheer unadulterated joy of the faces around me. I travelled the country many many times, following the show. Best night of all was an allnighter one New Year at Brixton Academy. Birds of Paradise cavorted around the stage. The 'Sparkle' ignited the Eat Static brain and we were off!! Again!! We surfed the dry ice which curled over us as The Last Train pulled in and told us tales of China, not Mountains. And at midnight, the huge white Megadog itself led an insane conga round the huge auditorium. A few weeks later I bought 'Last Train to Lhasa' and fired it into my CD Walkman for the walk back to work. As the train pulled in my eyes filled with tears and shivers rolled up and down my back as I remembered those magical moments. A woman stopped me in the street and asked if I was okay. I gave her a smile and said "I'm just remembering the happiest time of my life"
Ah, Return to the Source! What an experience (lots of good memories, but also some, er, bad ones....'nuff said). I remember a RTTS at the Fridge, Brixton, I think that it was the launch for the 'Chakra Journey' album. There were lots of crystals hanging from the celing, a huge pentagram on the floor and loads of druids, or somesuch peoples, and a mass meditaion; breathing patterns etc, and colours changing in time to it, then the music kicking in and off! As others have said, memories of this type of thing are very hazy at the best of times...... Megadog @ Brixton Academy: System 7, Banco (?), MC Tea Bag (He did my head in), Knights of the Occasional Table, Time Lords....Stilty Cow People everywhere! Hazy, oh so hazy!
I think that was new year 95. Great night...what i can remember of it .
megedogs from 93 onwards and source from 95, vry hazy but 'the best of times'. tsuyoshi suzuki! in a tepee with his system for the last two hours at brixton, irreplacable!
I remember my son was working at Coventry Poly when Megadog put a show on around about 94/95 with Eat Static, All he could say was that it was amazing and that all the glasses in the bars were falling off the racks and smashing because of the sub from the bass. Thanks to Pete Skan he he. Then in 97 I joined Toby for the Megadog Big Top Tour of the States and I came away from that with so many great memories of all the lovely people from Megadog, Bob Dog Amen Dog and Michael Dog to name only a few
oooohh!, the tales i could tell about the source and megadog nights, the people you may have met somewhere before, and never expexted to bump into face to face at a megadog night, when completely off the scale anywhere between 11pm and 3am. theres a little something to be said about that kind of thing that happens to people, its a feeling that you get and not something that you can put into words, perhaps there arent words in existence (or even needed) yet that can describe 'that other thing'. My first intro to megadog was at marcus garvey centre in nottingham in 1993, ege ban yasi, m.c. t'bag, transglobal underground and banco(who i missed). Ive never looked back since. First source experience was in october 1995 at brixton academy, and yet again proved to have that special touch about it. for nights 'out' megadog and source are unbeatable. love from the loobster
those three blokes were on roller blades wearing pinstripe suits at one newcastle megadog!
can anyone remember louise the alien clad stiltwalker? or the 9 foot tall camels from the 1994 new years eve all nighter? complete with the alien ant on stage with eat-static just after midnight? and the guy with his head in a tv set walking around the crowd? and the.......and the.....and the........and the........!
if only there were videos made.............I know we all have them stored up anyway, but well, you know..........................ahhhhh blissed times!
Sorry Ted but I think you are mad. Big Top nearly destroyed my career (and my mental health) and as for all those people being 'lovely'... Now, the earlier Megadogs, they were special. And Loobster, I think we did find a way to put that feeling into words, it's chorus of Obsidian ;0)
for which the lyrics are........
...... drum roll please .....
Sorry to spoil the sequence but i can't add a new subject, only reply to other messages as my 'puter is having a bad day. I have my version of the chorus but I doubt it's accurate! Anyway...
Unfortunatelty, some of us were either too young or into different music at the time. So the question is, what nights/events are about nowadays so that those of us who spent the mid 90's in dingey metaller pubs can begin to understand what it was all about. I've been to a few decent club nights in my time, but nothing that seems to compare with the Megadog experiences discussed elsewhere (except for a monster party somewhere near Stonehenge a few years ago!).
Sorry Toby? I forgot about all the shit you went thru with Megadog while on that tour. I completely understand how you feel about that tour............and I can understand why you feel like you do ...........SORRY MATE xxx
i wanna wanna run wawy with a mega-do-hog
oh alright then toby, I have to admit now 'I give up!'......please release me! (the englebert humperdink v's eat-static mix!)
what about your flattest or worst megadog memory?, they do exist! what about the megadog tent 2 years running 95 and 96 at the feenicks festervall in 'startfdrof on ayvin!'. great stuff, eat-static, the orb, adf, zion train, banco etc........! listening to zion train doing their version of 'babylons burning' by 'the ruts' at the end of their set, and the crowd loving it big style!
Shit, reading all that is sending shivers down my spine. I loved return to the source, whirlygig, havok, bill the cat, but Megadog was my thing. Here's a random list of the things i loved; Kim Skan, Banco @ the garvey ('96 I think, with a full band), Underworld (Mmm-dog @ leicester, and with drum club the year before), Louise (the dancer on stilts with a floor length frame skirt and a little demon dancing around within the skirt), the beach festival, T-bag (of course, even though he sometimes screeched over good tunes), The decor, crazy confusion in the Q club (brum) and of course all the fantastic people. It wasn't always great, too crowded sometimes, the ocasional tossers/fuck-up, and towards the end it became just another techno club. It'll give me and my mates some happy days in the old folks home, with blankets over our knees, cups of tea, reminiscing..........
toby, i hope i dont seem insensitive but i didint know about any hassle you had while with the megadog thing going on!
No probelm, the hassle was with the American tour (and Moby's management) not Megadog as such.
I worked for Megadog doing the dog decor for a wee while. Our paths must have crossed a few times Toby and Ted. That was before th America Tour though, boohoo. (I liked Michael a lot but IMHO Bob was such a drama queen.) Brixton Academy dates were the most memorable but I probably didn't pay much attention to you as I was too busy ogling Haytham from Senser. Naughty girl. I had pink hair back then Ted, is that where you got your idea? I remember the busride home back to Streatham in the morning hours. It was packed with people from the Hawkwind allnighter. It was silent, everyone was kind of coming down & in their own worlds, then a regular guy got on the bus. It tickled somone and they giggled, this made someone else giggle, then someone else & the next thing, everyone on the bus was laughing and we laughed all the way to our stops. A brilliant end to a brilliant night. That was funny but you probably had to be there. Like most things, it was feelings which made it, rather than particular stories. The feelings of being with like minded people who respect the world around them. The closeness of strangers in the halls sharing the same vibe. It was a magic time, I'm glad I lived through it as I don't see much of it happening now, call it old age! Another club was one at Charing Cross, but I can't remember it's name now. (That's a killer - someone enlighten me-I think it was usually a gay club but on Thursday night it was whirlygig/megadog style) Channel 4 came along once and I saw an actor from London's Burning there off his face! The squat gigs were the best. Does anyone know Lady Flo's in New Cross? Someone must do!
Hi Lynsey My hair allways started of purple (after I lost my wife Karina) very spiritual and it just seemed the right thing to do at the time. It used to turn pink after a few days ha ha, It is now a mixture of blonde, brown and grey. Ted
Mine's brown, but I throw some red into it occassionally. I must admit though - but don't tell anyone - I had to pluck a grey hair out the other month!!
i came in manchester in 94 from a small town in greece to study. although i knew about the rave scene a lot it was the first time i took part. i didnt jump into it but i went in many events including several megadogs and herbal tea parties. it was exciting cos it was all new to me and actually right in my face...i used to go to the "kudos" night a lot at UMIST underground where we had some crazy ones..(if that is relevant with the topic of the threat)...
I'm glad you came in manchester anastasis !
Anyone remember the Preston scene? All my memories are rolled into one, I can't untangle the threads. Oh what fun, man, this is too nostalgic for me, bye!
Yeah I know it's all dead and gone now but I miss the megadog, and it surprises me that there is so little about 'em on the web (yeah seen the proteus "historic" site). Does any one know of any sites where we saddoes can share memories, photos, etc, perhaps even track down a few old loonies?
And please someone must know either the band Thunderdogs, Lady Flo's squat in New Cross,(the corner of the park) or Wango Rileys travelling stage? I thought about a website "underground friendsreunited".
.."underground friendreunitied".....hehe yea, we could do with something like megadog again...was anyone else "on the beach" with them in cornwall '98....those where the daze...oper air live banco as well!!......there's still whirlygig though....canterburyfayre anyone?!!!
I just remember wishing Mc Teabag would "Shut the fuck up" and let the music breathe. I also remember being really disappointed that although megadog through their label planet dog would release some lush chilled sounds, the nights too often would feature awful dull as dishwater techno acts and dj's the likes of Ken Ishi, Ege bam Yasi, poxy old Orbital and 808 State for fucks sake !! Of course to counter this I'm eternally grateful for megadog introducing me to Banco, Dreadzone & Children of the Bong. But don't get too hung up on nostalgia there are nights just as good as megadog nowadays. a lot more of them.
yeah, fair point, what nights do u reckon are any good that are around now??...its all about the drums and the bass 'round here. I suppose the obvious answer is to stop complaining and do some promoting!
Anyone be interested if I started a night in London? Looks like "Disco Gecko" the disco may be being born soon...
yes yes and yes. Whereabouts are you thinking? There's loads of odd open-air festivals. I get the feeling Glyn would then finally come and visit the dirty smoke!
yep, thats a wicked idea Toby, live acts being where it's at I reckon, I'm well bored of paying to hear people play records that loads of my mates could play just as well (I'm sure you agree)....live banco, live eat static for the opening night then??!!!.....and yep, that probably would make visiting that shithole of a city more appealing Paul!!
....oh yeah, and if anyones wondering how often I check this board these days - constantly.... I'm writing up!
Sounds like a top idea Toby! I live in Notts but would certainly travel to London if the night sounds good. Live acts would be great, but not essential. Its hitting the right vibe thats important! Just reading the posts above its obvious that Megadog really tuned into the crowd that went along, and visa versa. If you could re-create something that was just close to that, it would be great, great, great....!
Anyone go to the the MegaDog Beach Feastival in St Austell, Cornwall? Now that WAS something!!! 808 STATE, ADF, and the Return to the Source building!!! Alien stilt walkers and UFO acid what a mental weekend...especially the Freak Show areas...oooh that was wierdy-woo. I'll never forget it it was the best festy, (apart from Glastonbury!) I've been to....would like to know if anyone else had a mad one their??!!!
