I remember meeting a chap who put on banco de gaia in the early days, and he told me that toby used to play behing a screen because of nerves or something like that. was he bullshitting me or was he getting mixed up with someone else?????
That was probably HIA, they used to play behind a screen to 'de-ego' the performance and make it about the music rather than the personalities. We did quite a few gigs together in the early days as they ran the Oscillate ambient club in Birmingham. Happy days...
That is what I love about watching you Toby. You always seem so humble, always have. Though I don't know you, you could be complete ego maniac for all we know. :-)
The music's the thing and the emotions behind it......from this I deduce that ego has nothing whatsoever to do with BdG....except perhaps that to an extent everyone likes to be accepted and to feel their efforts validated by those that receive, perceive and appreciate their work....I dont expect Toby is any different to any other musician in that respect....call that ego if you will. I only saw Toby the once and to be honest he was so wrapped up in the music and making sure that it sounded just right that he could have been totally oblivious to the audience's presence! for all I know....perfection is the thing.....
Hey i can liken toby and co to a lot of musical folks, they turn up and do their stuff and you take from it, and contribute to it what you will!, its not packaged and riddled with stardom!, thats why its been so successful for so long! Ive liked the music by toby and co for 14 years now, in a nutshell i could say that its not about the people who make the music but what happens to you when you hear it! love from the loobster xxx Hey toby, remember marcus garvey centre in 1993?, with tgu and ege bam yasi!
Did you eve go to Atomic Jam or Spacehopper or anything else at Que Club Birmingham... those were the day's...
